Business Development Director

Job Function

This position is a commercial leadership role within a small and experienced, entrepreneurial team evaluating and investing in a wide range of high-impact projects including Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) and Methane Emissions Reduction. The individual will lead the origination, structuring and execution of project investment transactions that contribute to global decarbonization.  Following execution, the individual will also contribute to managing assets in the portfolio to successful exits.

Key Responsibility Areas

The position reports to and works with the Managing Director, CCUS.  Key responsibilities include originating, structuring, negotiating and executing agreements for CCUS and methane investment opportunities.  This individual will work closely with the OGCI Climate Investments (CI) Technical, Financial and Legal teams to direct thorough due diligence, analysis, risk assessment and mitigation.  The successful candidate will maintain a close relationship with CI’s Investment Committee to ensure an efficient and effective management of investment opportunities through CI’s Investment Process.  The Business Development Director will also develop and maintain a robust network of industry contacts that generate attractive commercial opportunities.  In addition, the individual will contribute to the active management of completed investments.  Furthermore, the individual will participate in Climate Investment’s Venture and Investment Days and other initiatives to help promote deal flow and to work with potential partners/co-investors.

Main Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Identify, evaluate and recommend investment opportunities in CCUS, Methane and other projects.
  • Develop and maintain a wide network of industry contacts and relationships (developers, operators, investors, advisors and regulators) in order to maintain awareness of current trends and opportunities, and to become a natural go-to resource to discuss commercial opportunities.
  • Maintain a data base of project investment opportunities to track disposition and, where appropriate, current status in CI’s Investment Process.
  • Maintain awareness and knowledge of relevant regulatory activity that may impact project economics and use this understanding to optimize investment opportunities.
  • Provide preliminary screening of potential investments relative to CI’s strategic framework, and coordinate additional financial, technical and legal due diligence as opportunities progress through CI’s Investment Process.
  • Negotiate, prepare and coordinate approvals for commercial documents, including Term Sheets and Definitive Agreements, for CI’s investments.
  • Present investment opportunities to the CI Investment Committee, securing approval at key milestones through CI’s Investment Process.
  • Represent CI at industry functions, including speaking engagements, to raise awareness of the fund and attract new investment opportunities.
  • Work collaboratively and liaise regularly with other OGCI departments and teams, particularly OGCI CCUS and Role of Gas Workstreams.

(Direct and functional reporting relationships; interaction within and between functions).

  • Reports directly to Technology Principal
  • Works broadly within the overall Technology team to support various Ventures and Project investment activities
  • Active collaboration and interaction across the entire CI organisation and in particular with the Legal, Finance, Environmental, Projects and Marketing functions

External

(Liaison requirements with other companies; consultants; agencies; professional associations; peer groups etc).

Education and Professional Qualifications Required
  • Demonstrable depth of relevant professional experience in energy and/or business development which may include but not be limited to natural resources, power generation, industrials, project development, private equity, investment banking, M&A or management consulting.

Additional Specialised Knowledge and Skills:

  • Advanced degree in business, accounting and/or a technical field is a plus.

Experience and Technical Competencies Required:

  • Demonstrated achievement in commercial leadership roles.
  • Specific experience in originating, developing, securing approval for and supporting structured transactions and/or projects in CCUS, power generation, energy (including oil and gas) or other relevant area. 
  • International operational experience is highly desired.
  • Sound business judgment; the ability to quickly evaluate opportunities and deploy resources
  • A risk-management mindset; identifies key transaction risks and structures creative solutions to protect investment value.
  • Excellent organisation skills, including prioritizing, forward planning and administration
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to oversee and review the financial analysis of investment opportunities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office applications; comfort and presence to effectively interact with CI executive management and governance bodies.

Requirement to undertake regular business travel internationally and within the US.

The position will be based in Houston or London.  Candidates must be eligible to work in the US or UK.

  • Domestic and International Travel will be required from time to time (approximately 25-35%)
  • Diverse locations of OGCI may require out of hours meetings from time to time

Special Physical Requirements:

Visits to industrial sites requiring appropriate PPE will be required

 

Additional Information

  • Position is based in London or Houston. Eligibility to work in the final location is mandatory
  • The role may require additional hours to be worked above 37.5 hours per week where necessary to meet business requirements with no additional payment for overtime
